INTER-EXCELLENCE

Project Name: Genetic variability of hyper-spectral reflectance in Scots pine ecotypes for selection of drought-resistant individuals
Beneficiary: Czech University of Life Sciences Prague – Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences
Investigator: prof. Ing. Milan Lstibůrek, MSc, Ph.D.
Total eligible costs: 9 829 000 CZK
Implementation Project Date: 1.1.2020 – 31.12.2022
Operational Programme Title: INTER-EXCELLENCE

The main aim of the project is to gain new knowledge about genetic variability of hyperspectral reflectance within the Scots pine local ecotypes for subsequent selection of drought-resistant individuals, using genomic selection methods. We focus on multidisciplinary basic research combining population genomics, stress physiology, and multidimensional optical sensing to investigate the adaptive profile of pine forest under conditions of induced drought stress during early developmental stages. Furthermore, we aim to assess the relationship of numerous physiological markers to the evaluation of plant health at an early age, as these may serve as an indirect indicator of adaptive traits. This project should answer some fundamental questions about the survival of newly established forest plantations, which is a prerequisite for the large-scale functional integrity of European forest ecosystems.

Specific research objectives are defined as follows:

  • Extensive analysis of in-situ data from the progeny of the local pine forest ecotypes.
  • Realization of controlled experiments in growth chambers with induced drought with consequent SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) genotyping.
  • Genetic evaluation of both in-situ progeny trials and controlled experiments.

Upscaling of laboratory spectroscopic measurements on needle samples in the level of hyperspectral imaging obtained with a hyperspectral camera carried by a drone.
