Educating seniors is one of the prestigious tasks of modern universities in developed countries. Through the University of the Third Age, the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences offers older adults the chance to spend their free time actively. It offers the opportunity to refresh half-forgotten knowledge and supplement it with new insights, talk to leading experts on various topics, and even boost optimism in life. A group of "classmates" of similar age, opinion, and professional background and experienced lecturers discuss and reflect on the problems of today's fast-paced world, which, whether we like it or not, fundamentally affects each of us. Another significant advantage of studying is the opportunity to spend time away from the hustle and bustle of the city in the peaceful environment of the University's natural park, as well as the opportunity to meet new friends among your peers.
The Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences has been organizing u3a courses and programmes for many years now and our courses are among the most popular. We are happy to welcome those interested in studying in programmes focused on forestry and forest management, nature conservation, hunting, dendrology, and more.
Basic information – Mysterious Life of our Forests :
Programme content:
Forests currently cover about 37% of the Czech Republic. This value is slightly below the European Union average (42%); however, due to the geographical relief and different environmental conditions, our forests represent a diverse mosaic of habitats with typical species of fungi, plants, and animals. Many of these species are of fundamental importance for the biodiversity of forest ecosystems, or, in contrast, they represent forest pests limiting the productive function of the forest. Current research and scientific methods bring completely new, often surprising findings about the life of these species. The aim of the course is to pass on these findings.
- Semester 1: Forests from the perspective of biodiversity, typical and interesting forest plants and fungi.
- Semester 2: Typical and interesting forest invertebrates.
- Semester 3: Typical and interesting forest birds.
- Semester 4: Typical and interesting forest mammals.
