The Laboratory of mechanical testing of wood and biomaterials focuses primarily on standard [MS1] testing of the mechanical properties of solid wood and wood-based materials, as well as materials based on other lignocellulosic materials. In most cases, testing is carried out in accordance with applicable EN standards or other prescribed (recognised) standards. The tests include determining tensile, compressive and bending strength and (static) modulus of elasticity; shear strength; splitting resistance; the withdrawal and pull-through resistance of fasteners; toughness; hardness; dynamic modulus of elasticity; and other mechanical properties.

Instrumentation

The following main equipment is located in the laboratory:

TIRA test 2850S tensile machine with Aramis optical system,
UTS/TIRA Tempos tensile machine,
The ZEISS ARAMIS non-contact optical system, which is used for full-field measurement of deformations, displacements and stress distribution under mechanical loading,
Charpy pendulum (50, 150 a 300 J),
DuraVision-30 hardness tester,
Fakopp Ultrasonic Timer and other predominantly acoustic instruments and equipment for non-destructive testing.

Supporting equipment includes BMT and Memmert climate chambers for conditioning test specimens under standardised climatic conditions.
