Single-Cell electroantenograph

The device enables electrophysiological sensing of the activity of olfactory receptor neurons, which are located on the surface of the antennae of insects. Pictured is a Farraday cage containing a microscope and micromanipulators mounted on a pneumatic rest table. The micromanipulators allow the gentle introduction of fine microelectrodes into the olfactory sensilla that cover the surface of the insect's antennae. The antennae of the bark beetle Ips typographus is displayed on the PC monitor, which is used to record and evaluate the electrical potentials of olfactory neurons. The experimenter sets the 800x magnification needed to make the olfactory sensilla visible. The device is used to study the physiological parameters of individual olfactory receptor neurons and the stimuli that activate them.
