African swine fever

Research results of wild boar spatial activity carried out at FFWS CULS were one of the key documents for the determination of measures to prevent the spread of African swine fever infection in the wild boar population. African swine fever is a devastating viral infection that currently has societal consequences in food industry worldwide. FFWS employees (Ježek, Podgorski) are members of the eradication team in the Czech Republic and Poland, expert consultants of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), and committees of the European Commission. The results achieved at FFWS were the basis for defining measures implemented in the Czech Republic, which was the only country to eradicate African swine fever. Subsequently, these procedures were successfully used in Belgium and several EU countries implemented them in their Emergency Plans.

Dr. Podgorski, along with colleagues from the USDA and Colorado State University, published a new article in the journal Ecology and Evolution: Ecological drivers of African swine fever virus persistence in wild boar populations: Insight for control.

ENETWILD is a European Food Safety Agency project to study the abundance of important game species, pathogens, and their hosts. Currently it is mainly the study of wild boars and African swine fever. EVA team member Dr. Tomasz Podgorski is a leader for a group providing synchronization and data collection in Eastern European countries. Dr. Miloš Ježek provides the group with data from the Czech Republic for modelling abundance and spatial activity.

Wild boar are generally considered to be very volatile and often changing their habitat. Among hunters, it is considered very difficult to manage and does not know the boundaries of hunting grounds. Generally, traditional thinking often persists among hunters, but they often do not reflect the current reality. The ever-increasing numbers of wild boar and the expansion of its range require reassessment of the knowledge gained so far on the ethology and behaviour of wild boar and the use of exact data on the behaviour of wild boar. The just mentioned knowledge about space requirements is the basis of game management. This set of maps is based on telemetric monitoring, that is, real movement of wild boar and can thus be a guide for hunt users in determining their management plans. It is clear from the results that wild boar have  very significantly fewer space requirements than originally thought, and it is therefore necessary to manage it accordingly.

These maps were the first outputs that evaluated the behaviour of wild boar in the Czech Republic, and other outputs of the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Science gradually followed up on them. As a set of outputs, they became complex material that was used in procedures within eradication of African swine fever in the Czech Republic.

Department of game management and wildlife biology added an English version of certificated maps which helped in the fight against African swine fever in the Czech Republic.
