The dynamic spread of the northern raccoon has been well known for many years and represents a serious threat to native ecosystems in the Czech Republic. The raccoon has not received adequate research attention, therefore the goal of this project is to obtain comprehensive knowledge of the ecology of the raccoon in the new environment of the colonized landscape of the Czech Republic. The partial aims focuses on behavior and habitat preferences using GPS telemetry, evaluation of feeding behavior, evaluation of spread of two subpopulations, and establishment of effective eradication principles, including the design of a selective group hunting trap. An integral part of the project is the transfer of acquired knowledge to towards state institutions and also to the professional and lay public.
The project reg. no. SS07020021 entitled Northern raccoon as a threat to native ecosystems in the Czech Republic: food requirements, habitat preferences, population potential and eradication options is financed with the support of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic within the Environment for Life Programme. This project is funded under the National Recovery Plan from the European Recovery and Resilience Facility.
