Climate change and biodiversity loss are considered to be the crucial ecological and social challenges of our times that necessitate adaptive policies and strategies, in which forests will play a key role. The current state of knowledge lacks the information on multi-centennial consequences and cumulative effects of increasingly severe disturbance with regards to forest resilience and preservation of associated biodiversity and ecological services. We aim to elucidate complex and multi-dimensional relationships among disturbances, biodiversity and carbon. Long-term effects of natural disturbance dynamics on trade-offs between forest carbon and taxonomic and functional diversity across primary and managed forests will be evaluated using a unique combination of a multi-taxa approach, data on forests carbon stocks, and the dendrochronological disturbance history reconstruction. Our results are vital for the assessment of relative resilience of forest ecosystem function in the context of global change.
