Working together to restore forests after the bark beetle calamity

In June 2025, the third workshop within the SUPERB project entitled Together for Forest Restoration after the Bark Beetle Calamity III took place in Žďár nad Sázavou. The morning session took place at Žďár Castle, the headquarters of project partner Kinský Žďár, a.s., where the results of forest restoration after the bark beetle calamity were presented, with a particular focus on tree diversity and financing. Participants, including experts and the general public, engaged in lively discussions about the challenges and successes of the project and had the opportunity to share their opinions and experiences. Newly involved groups, including tourists and local residents, enriched the perspective on forest management issues from different angles.

The afternoon continued with an excursion to the forests of Kinský Žďár, a.s., where participants visited several stops demonstrating examples of good practice. Discussions focused on two-phase forest restoration, the importance of pioneer tree species, improving the microclimate for Silver fir, as well as landscape measures – such as the construction of ponds and their positive impact on biodiversity. The stop at the natural regeneration site and the final discussion on further management options provided valuable insights that can serve as inspiration for other regions. Finally, a new forest nursery was presented.

Feedback from participants, recorded via an evaluation questionnaire, confirmed that the workshop took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere. Participants appreciated the opportunity to learn about the project's results in the field and agreed on the importance of involving the wider public and experts from various fields. The challenge for the future remains not only further communication on forest restoration, but also the expansion of activities beyond the demonstration areas and the comparison of approaches by different forest managers. Overall, the workshop contributed to increasing understanding and sharing experiences, and was rated as very beneficial by all participants.
