Hidden Histories in the Genome: What Red Deer Tell Us About the Last Ice Age

EN

A groundbreaking study of red deer genetics across Europe has revealed that the X chromosome holds vital clues to past population changes that are hidden in other parts of the genome. By comparing DNA from 144 individuals, researchers found that the X chromosome preserves signals of ancient population splits better than autosomal (non-sex) chromosomes, especially from the Ice Age period.

Because males pass their X chromosome only to daughters and the X chromosome has a smaller "effective population size," it changes more rapidly during periods of isolation. This makes it especially sensitive to past glacial events and postglacial recolonization patterns. The study shows that analyzing different types of DNA can uncover hidden demographic events and refine our understanding of how species survived and spread after the Ice Age.

Skryté příběhy v genech: Co nám laně prozradí o době ledové

Nová genetická studie jelena evropského ukázala, že chromozom X uchovává důležité stopy dávných událostí, které ostatní části DNA zakrývají. Vědci analyzovali DNA 144 jedinců z celé Evropy a zjistili, že právě X chromozom lépe odráží staré populační rozdělení z období poslední doby ledové než běžné (autosomální) chromozomy.
