Medieval Seeds Reveal Hidden Beetle Infestation In Sudan

EN

This study provides the first archaeobotanical evidence of bruchid beetle infestation in seeds of the genus Vachellia from the Christian period in northern Sudan. Using advanced imaging methods such as CT (computed tomography) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the researchers were able to identify characteristic signs of larval development inside the seeds non-invasively, such as larval tunnels and exit holes. These traces confirm that the beetles developed directly within the seeds, offering a unique insight into ancient interactions between insects, plants and humans.

What makes this work especially strong is its combination of originality, interdisciplinary collaboration, and cutting-edge technology. Experts from archaeology, archaeobotany, botany, entomology, and imaging worked together across institutions and countries. The findings not only expand knowledge of ancient ecosystems but also reveal how stored plant resources were affected by pests, highlighting long-term interactions between humans, plants, and insects.

Mimořádná hodnota práce spočívá v originalitě, silné mezioborové spolupráci a využití špičkových technologií.
