Pollen Can Help Forests Adapt to Climate Change

EN

To help forests keep pace with rapid climate change, scientists propose a new form of assisted migration based on the transfer of pollen rather than seeds or seedlings. Pollen from populations adapted to future climatic conditions would be used to pollinate trees in existing seed orchards. The resulting offspring would combine introduced adaptive genetic variation with traits inherited from locally adapted mother trees. Compared with the transport of seeds or living plants, pollen transfer may also reduce phytosanitary risks, nursery costs, and some legal and logistical barriers. Computer simulations and the existing network of seed orchards indicate that the approach could be incorporated into current forestry practice. Further field testing and suitable regulatory frameworks will be needed before its broader operational application.
