Wild Boar Attacks on Hunting Dogs: The Length of the Hunting Season Matters

EN

Hunting dogs play a crucial role in driven hunts but simultaneously face a significant risk of injury from wild boars. What factors influence the frequency of these dangerous encounters? A new study analyzed data from five hunting seasons across 40 hunting grounds and reached a surprising conclusion: while the number of driven hunts, intervals between them, and the number of participants had no substantial impact on the risk of attacks, the key factor was the length of the hunting season. As the hunting season lengthened, the risk of injury to hunting dogs in encounters with wild boars increased. During the study, 150 cases of injuries were documented across 797 driven hunts. Most injuries were minor (73.8 %), but nearly one-fifth were severe (18.8 %), and 7.4 % resulted in the death of the dog. These findings suggest that shortening the hunting season could reduce the risk of such encounters and highlight the need to explore options to better protect hunting dogs from injuries.
