Linking seed size and number to trait syndromes in trees

EN

Understanding the characteristics and specific features of trees for their growth and reproduction is crucial for the future of forestry, which is currently under threat by climate change. Identifying tree species which produce a large total biomass of seeds (product of seed number and seed size; hereafter, species seed productivity (SSP) is now more important than ever. A research study analyzed 12 million observations from all continents and mapped the sizes and numbers of seeds of different tree species using GJAM analysis. The results showed that increased SSP was associated with high leaf area, low foliar nitrogen, low specific leaf area (SLA), and dense wood. Trait covariation is consistent with opposing strategies: one is fast-growing, early successional, with high dispersal, and the other is slow growing, stress-tolerant, and recruits in shaded conditions. The study found that seed size was the main predictor of seed number and SSP.

Výzkum porovnával výsledky 12 milionů pozorování ze všech světadílů a pomocí analýzy GJAM byly zmapovány počty a velikosti semen různých druhů stromů. Zvýšená SSP souvisela se zvýšenou listovou plochou, nízkým obsahem dusíku v listech a s nízkou specifickou listovou plochou. Kovariance znaků byla v souladu s opačnými strategiemi – první strategie rychle rostoucích, sukcesních, často rozšířených druhů a druhá pomalu rostoucích, stresu odolných a stínomilných druhů. Výsledky ukázaly, že velikost semen byla hlavním prediktorem počtu a mezidruhové produktivity semen.
