Small islands in the wide open sea: The importance of non-farmed habitats under power pylons for mammals in agricultural landscape

EN

This research, for the first time, evaluated the importance of in-field, non-farmed habitats under high-voltage power line infrastructure for mammals inhabiting intensively used agricultural landscapes. The result is that mammals, especially red deer (Capreolus capreolus), European hare (Lepus europaeus), and red fox (Vulpes vulpes), prefer unused areas under power pylons more than adjacent farmland during winter. In addition, comfort behaviour (feeding, resting, sniffing) was more frequently observed in these areas. The herb and shrub layers under power pylons could therefore be an important element increasing biological potential in the agricultural landscape.
