Cross-border workshop focused on specific activities for water retention and increasing the resilience of forests to climate change

The workshop for foresters in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm is an example of the successful continuation of the cross-border LESYpreKLÍMU project focused on adapting forests to climate change in the border regions of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The main objective of the project, of which FLD ČZU is also a part, is to develop innovative approaches to the application of close-to-nature solutions and measures. A key aim is to utilize the natural potential of forest ecosystems and their processes, with an emphasis on protecting and strengthening the uniqueness of the natural environment.

The second workshop, which took place on November 6 and 7, 2025, followed on from the October meeting on the Slovak side. The program included field surveys and presentations of partial results of the implementation of water retention measures and forest cultivation activities. The aim of the workshop was to present the measures implemented in forest stands to all participating partners with the involvement of the wider professional public. The program also included expert presentations by project partners and invited experts on topics such as water retention in the landscape and erosion prevention in relation to the effects of extreme precipitation, monitoring of forest wildlife using drones, and management of comparative test areas in relation to reducing wildlife populations.

The project is a unique example of cooperation between experts from several countries to address climate challenges. Thanks to nature-based approaches and pilot measures, it provides concrete solutions that contribute to the long-term resilience of forest ecosystems in border areas. This project is not only a step towards nature conservation and climate change mitigation, but also an inspiration for further initiatives focused on sustainable development and cooperation in the Central European region.

The project entitled "Nature-based solutions for forest adaptation to climate change" (acronym: LESYpreKLÍMU, No. 403201DJP9) is implemented under the Interreg Slovakia-Czechia program. The total budget amounts to €1,551,816.73. Up to 80% of the budget, i.e. €1,241,453.38, will be financed from the ERDF. The lead partner is the state-owned enterprise LESY Slovenskej republiky (Forests of the Slovak Republic), and other partners include the National Forestry Centre, Lesy ČR, s. p. (Forests of the Czech Republic) and the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague.
