A new project called BEECH has been launched at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences (FLD CZU), with the primary goal of developing a strategy to support biodiversity in beech forests and increase their resilience to climate change.
At the end of April 2026, the project’s kick-off conference, titled “Future of Beech Forests in the Ore Mountains in the Era of Climate Change,” took place in Litvínov, officially launching the project. The conference, opened by Assoc. Prof. Lenka Plavcová, Ph.D., from FLD CZU, offered a diverse professional program focused on the issues facing beech forests in the Krušné hory mountains in the context of climate change. Experts from the Czech Republic and Germany presented the latest findings in the fields of forestry, nature conservation, and research. Additionally, on behalf of the FLD CZU, Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Jan Hofmeister, Ph.D., delivered a presentation on the biodiversity of beech forests.
The program also included a closing discussion, which provided an opportunity for representatives from the forestry sector, academia, and other institutions to share their experiences.
The project is co-financed by the European Union under the Interreg Czech Republic–Saxony 2021–2027 program, and the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences CZU serves as the project coordinator.
