The project focuses on solving current and future problems in forestry (including the biological basis of forest ecosystems in the temperate, marginally subtropical and tropical zones) and lumbering in the Czech Republic, caused by global change and finding excellent, scientifically proven results necessary to involve both areas in Industry 4.0. The project emphasizes the most important areas where research is urgently needed – at the level of 3 programs:
1. Biology (Program1: Organisms in relation to Global Change (GC));
2. Forestry including decision support systems for all 3 programs
(Program2: Production and disturbation regimes of forest ecosystems under GC and Industry 4.0);
3. Wood Science (Program3:
New bio-based materials and technologies with respect to GC trends and the fourth industrial revolution).
Project objectives:
- Research on the response of plants and animals to global change;
- Research in changes in the production of wood and non-wood functions of the forest in connection with global change and in connection with Industry 4.0;
- Research of new wood-based materials and technological processes in response to global change and the requirements of Industry 4.0.
These vertical research lines are horizontally interconnected by Research on decision support models in the forestry and wood science sectors in preparation for global change and the requirements of Industry 4.0.
The project will provide the necessary human resources and the necessary modern infrastructure, which, in addition to excellent research, will enable the acquisition of a larger number of international projects and the publication of project results in the highest quality periodicals.
A new organizational unit (called EVA4.0) was built within the Faculty of Forestry and Wood CULS in Prague, which is led by excellent scientists from the USA, Europe, but also the Czech Republic. It examines scientific problems in the presented areas at the world level. The team of scientists thus forms the core of a team of approximately 50 members, consisting of excellent scientists as project leaders and leaders of three scientific programs, key foreign and domestic scientists in sub-program leaders (17 outstanding scientists in total), and domestic scientists at individual scientific sections level (more than 25 experts). Another important part of the team consists of highly motivated post-doctors (domestic and foreign in the number of 20), doctoral students (30) and related foreign experts (not employed in the project, in the number of more than 30). The latter have the role of advisory bodies ensuring high quality research and the selected will create the EVA4.0 External Advisory Board (EAB).
