Estimating heritability—the proportion of variation in a trait associated with genetic differences—often relies on large sets of DNA markers. This study shows that even small genotyping errors can substantially distort these estimates.
Using computer simulations, the researchers found that sparse marker panels tended to underestimate heritability even when the data contained no errors. Dense marker panels produced accurate estimates with error-free data, but even low error rates could lead to overestimation. At high error levels, the estimates eventually declined toward zero.
The results demonstrate that more DNA markers do not automatically guarantee more reliable estimates. Rigorous laboratory quality control and statistical methods that account for uncertainty in genetic data are therefore essential.

Malé chyby v DNA mohou zkreslit odhady dědivosti
Odhad dědivosti, tedy podílu variability znaku spojeného s genetickými rozdíly, se často opírá o rozsáhlé soubory DNA markerů. Studie ukazuje, že i malé chyby v genotypování mohou tyto odhady výrazně zkreslit.
Pomocí počítačových simulací a analytického rozboru vědci zjistili, že řídké soubory markerů měly tendenci dědivost podhodnocovat i v datech bez chyb.
