The way a person walks through a forest with a handheld laser scanner can significantly affect the quality of the collected data. Using realistic computer simulations based on real forest measurements, researchers compared different walking trajectories to determine which best reconstruct tree stems during inventories of structurally diverse forest stands.
The study found that following only the perimeter of a sample plot is not enough. In structurally diverse stands with dense understory vegetation, this approach reduced tree detection and the accuracy of estimating diameter at breast height (DBH). The best results were achieved by combining a perimeter loop with evenly spaced transects across the plot, ensuring more uniform coverage. In simpler, even-aged stands with little or no understory, the choice of trajectory had much less influence on the results.
