Ph.D. student

At the University of Göttingen -Public Law Foundation-, Abteilung für Bioklimatologie des Büsgen-Instituts, there is a position as

Ph.D. student (all genders welcome)
Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L/65%

to be filled. Starting date is 2/1/2023. The position is limited for 3 years.

The successful candidate will join the approved Horizon-project CLIMB-FOREST on the identification of sustainable pathways and management alternatives for European forestry. For this position, she*he will do research on net CO2, water vapor, and energy fluxes of forests using micrometeorological measurements.

What you will do

The project aims to analyze net CO2, H2O, and energy fluxes of various forest ecosystems across Europe. Further, the seasonal and interannual variability of the flux exchange and other ecosystem functions, such as photosynthetic capacity and water use efficiency, of these forests will be investigated and related to forest structure (e.g., species composition, age diversity, canopy height) and other ecosystem characteristics (e.g., soil conditions). Moreover, the interrelation between forest structure and resilience to climate extremes will be analyzed. As a PhD candidate, your tasks will include maintenance work at forest study sites in Central Germany, analy-zing and interpreting scientific data (meteorological, eddy covariance, plant physiological, and terrestrial laser scan data) of multiple study sites, data quality assessment and database management, applying modelling approaches of various complexity, presenting results nationally and internationally, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications you should have

  • M.Sc. degree in meteorology, environmental sciences, geoecology, biology, physics, geo-graphy or similar (required)
  • Experience in analysis of land-atmosphere interactions (required)
  • Experience with micrometeorological measurements (preferred)
  • Experience with data analysis in R, python, matlab, or other relevant programming languages (preferred)
  • Skills and interest in working scientifically and quantitatively (required)
  • Interest and willingness to perform fieldwork across Germany (preferred)
